early
to look at complexity
and search for structure.

To take what is broken,
separate it into parts,
understand the weakness,
find the pattern,
and make it mind.
Control the weakness.
Find the flaw.

Fix it.

I have lived much of my life
as both architect
and architecture.

Designing the man
while being the man.

And yet,

after all these years,

I sometimes wonder
whether the deepest parts of life
were never meant
to be engineered.

Because somewhere within me
lives another man.

The opposite of me.

He does not need
to understand everything.

That alone
makes him difficult for me
to comprehend.

I have spent a lifetime
asking why.

Why did this happen?
Why did that fail?
Why did someone change?
Why did something I built carefully
not become what I believed it could?

The opposite of me
asks fewer questions.

Not because he lacks curiosity.

Because he has discovered
that some answers arrive
only after the question
has been released.

He does not examine every silence
for meaning.

He does not treat every setback
as a problem awaiting remediation.

He knows
that not every vulnerability
must be patched.

Some openings
are how the light enters.

The opposite of me
does not keep score.

That may be
the greatest difference between us.

I remember effort.

I remember promises.

I remember who stood beside me
and who disappeared.

I remember what I gave.

I remember what something
was supposed to become.

There is a ledger somewhere
inside the human heart,

and I confess—

mine has sometimes
been meticulously maintained.

The opposite of me
burned his ledger long ago.

Not because others were right.

Not because hurt was imaginary.

Not because betrayal
became acceptable.

He simply decided
that peace was worth more
than accurate accounting.

I am still learning this.

I have always respected discipline.

The student must practice.

The professional must prepare.

The teacher must know.

The architect must think ahead.

The sādhaka must return
to the mantra
even when the mind refuses
to become quiet.

Again.

And again.

And again.

There is dignity in discipline.

I still believe that.

But the opposite of me
knows something else.

There comes a point
where discipline must become surrender.

Where effort
has carried you
as far as effort can go.

Where another repetition
does not open the door.

Where knowledge stands outside
with all its books,

and silence alone
is permitted to enter.

I have spent decades
learning how to know.

The opposite of me
is teaching me
how not to know.

This is harder.

I have known the comfort
of expertise.

There is reassurance
in being the person
who has seen this before.

The one who can explain.

The one who can guide.

The one others turn toward
when the path becomes uncertain.

But life has an exquisite way
of eventually asking questions
for which experience
offers no privileged access.

Loss does not respect expertise.

Love does not follow architecture.

Grace does not arrive
because the requirements
were properly documented.

And God—

God has never once
asked for my résumé.

The opposite of me
finds this amusing.

He sits quietly
while I explain the universe.

And when I finally stop speaking,

he points toward the heart.

I spent years searching
for teachers.

And I was blessed.

Some taught through words.

Some through discipline.

Some through encouragement.

Some simply through presence.

A quiet smile.

A glance.

A gentleness
that did not need to announce
its authority.

Only much later
did I understand:

the greatest teachers
were never trying
to make me dependent upon them.

They were quietly directing me
toward something within.

The opposite of me
understood this
before I did.

He does not search for the Guru
only outside himself.

He remembers the feet
at which he once sat,

the voices that guided him,

the hands that blessed him,

the people whose faith
gave him courage.

But gratitude does not become attachment.

He bows—

and then listens within.

I am still learning
how to do that.

The opposite of me
does not fear becoming irrelevant.

I do.

Perhaps everyone who has spent
a lifetime creating
must someday face that fear.

Will the work matter?

Will the teaching remain?

Will anyone remember?

Did I build enough?

Did I accomplish enough?

Did I become
what I was capable of becoming?

The questions become quieter
with age,

but more precise.

The opposite of me
answers them strangely.

He asks:

Was I kind?

Did I teach what I knew?

Did I help someone stand
when they might otherwise
have fallen?

Did I protect what was entrusted
to me?

Did I leave another person
with greater courage
than when I met them?

Did I love well?

These are inconvenient metrics.

There are no dashboards
for them.

No quarterly reviews.

No target architecture.

No final score.

Only conscience.

The opposite of me
is comfortable with that.

I am becoming so.

Slowly.

The opposite of me
also understands
that strength has changed meaning.

When I was younger,
strength meant standing firm.

Fighting.

Persisting.

Refusing to bend.

And there were times
when that strength was necessary.

But now I wonder
whether another strength
was waiting behind it.

The strength to forgive
without receiving an apology.

The strength to bless
what cannot remain.

The strength to say,
I was wrong.

The strength to say,
I do not know.

The strength to allow someone
to misunderstand me
without spending my soul
correcting the record.

The strength to walk away
without needing the last word.

The opposite of me
possesses this strength.

I am practicing.

Some days poorly.

But practicing.

There are still two men
inside me.

One believes life
must be conquered.

The other believes
life must be received.

One builds walls
against uncertainty.

The other opens windows.

One says:

Work harder.

The other says:

Be still.

One says:

Understand.

The other whispers:

Trust.

One searches for the Divine
through knowledge,
ritual,
mantra,
discipline,
scripture.

The other finds Her
sitting quietly
in the space
between two thoughts.

Perhaps neither is wrong.

Perhaps this has been
my misunderstanding.

The opposite of me
was never meant
to replace me.

He was meant
to complete me.

The architect needs the mystic.

The teacher needs the student.

The warrior needs tenderness.

The intellect needs devotion.

Discipline needs grace.

Knowledge needs silence.

And the man
who has spent his life
becoming something

must eventually meet
the man willing
to become nothing.

Not worthless.

Nothing.

Empty enough
to receive.

Silent enough
to hear.

Still enough
to recognize
what was always present.

Perhaps this is why
the journey inward
feels strangely familiar.

I have spent years
believing I was walking
toward something.

Toward knowledge.

Toward accomplishment.

Toward wisdom.

Toward Her.

But perhaps
She has been walking toward me
all along.

Perhaps every success
made me confident enough
to continue.

Every failure
made me humble enough
to listen.

Every teacher
pointed toward the same doorway.

Every wound
opened it slightly.

Every prayer
brought me closer.

Until one day
the distance between seeker
and sought
became difficult to find.

And now,

when I encounter
the opposite of me,

I no longer argue with him.

I recognize him.

He is the quieter truth
beneath the louder life.

He is the surrender
beneath the discipline.

The stillness
beneath the effort.

The devotion
beneath the intellect.

The child
beneath the teacher.

The disciple
beneath every title
I have ever carried.

And perhaps one day,

when enough has been learned
and enough has been unlearned,

when ambition has finished
its work,

when memory has become gratitude
instead of burden,

when prayer no longer requires words,

the opposite of me
and I
will finally discover

that we were never
two people at all.

Only one life—

learning through opposites
how to return

to the quiet center
from which it came.

And there,

perhaps,

I will no longer need
to ask

who I am.

Because the one
who kept asking

will finally have become still.

And in that stillness,

only She will remain.

–Mani

I have spent most of my lifebuilding.
