apart
until I can see
what holds them together.

Perhaps that is my nature.

Give me a problem
and I search for structure.

Give me confusion
and I search for pattern.

Give me certainty
and—

perhaps annoyingly—

I begin looking
for the assumptions beneath it.

So when someone tells me,

Open your mind,

a question immediately rises:

Have you opened yours?

Open enough
to consider
that I may not be wrong?

Open enough
to allow my experience
to contradict your theory?

Open enough
to hear me
without silently preparing
the response?

How often have I called something
illogical

when what I really meant was—

it does not fit the architecture
I have built inside my head?

That question bothers me.

Because I have spent years
building that architecture.

Brick by brick.

Experience.

Education.

Success.

Failure.

Books.

Teachers.

Arguments won.

Arguments lost.

Things I believed once
and no longer do.

Things I doubted once
and now hold sacred.

All of it becoming
this thing I casually call

my mind.

But is it mine?

How much of what I believe
did I actually discover?

And how much
did I inherit?

From family?

From culture?

From teachers?

From fear?

From ambition?

From people I loved enough
that I never thought
to question them?

How many of my truths
are conclusions—

and how many
are simply very old believing it?

Or wiser
for finally releasing it?

Why are we ashamed
to change our minds?

Shouldn’t a mind
that never changes
frighten us more?

If new evidence
cannot change my conclusion,

was it ever
a conclusion?

Or merely faith
wearing the clothes
of reason?

And even faith—

should faith fear
a question?

If what I believe is true,

what can honest inquiry
possibly destroy?

Perhaps only
what was false.

Then why do I defend
my beliefs so fiercely?

Do I love truth?

Or do I love
being right?

There is an uncomfortable difference.

I have been right
many times.

I have also been wrong
with extraordinary confidence.

That memory
should humble me.

And yet…

opening the mind
cannot mean
emptying it of judgment.

There are things
I have learned through pain
that I do not need
to relearn through stupidity.

There are doors
I closed deliberately.

There are people
I forgave
but would not follow again.

There are ideas
I examined carefully
before rejecting them.

Must I reopen every door
simply to prove
I am open-minded?

Surely not.

A river needs banks
or it becomes a flood.

Freedom without discernment
becomes chaos.

Acceptance without intelligence
becomes gullibility.

And an open mind
without an anchor
can be carried anywhere
by the loudest wind.

So perhaps
the question is not—

Is my mind open?

Perhaps the question is—

Can it open without losing itself?

Can I listen
without surrendering reason?

Can I disagree
without diminishing you?

Can I hear something
that threatens my worldview
without immediately building
a wall around it?

Can I say,

I do not know,

without feeling smaller?

Can I say,

You may be right,

without feeling defeated?

Can I say,

I was wrong,

without rewriting history
to protect my pride?

Can I encounter
another person’s truth
without demanding
that it become mine?

Can two people
look at the same mountain
from opposite sides

and both describe honestly
what they see?

Perhaps truth
is sometimes like that.

Not relative.

Not whatever we wish it to be.

But larger
than the angle
from which I happen
to be looking.

And then there is God.

What does it mean
to open my mind there?

I have read.

Studied.

Prayed.

Questioned.

Chanted.

Sat before teachers.

Followed traditions
older than anything
I could possibly invent.

And yet—

if the Infinite
can be completely contained
inside my understanding,

what exactly
have I understood?

Surely not the Infinite.

Perhaps every name
is a doorway.

Every mantra
a direction.

Every scripture
a map.

Every teacher
a finger pointing.

Sacred—

yes.

Necessary—

perhaps.

But is the finger
the moon?

Is the map
the destination?

Is my understanding of Her
Her?

Or merely
the little vessel
with which I have gone
to collect water
from an endless ocean?

And if another person
arrives carrying
a different vessel,

does that make
their water false?

I don’t know.

And strangely,

I am becoming more comfortable
saying that.

I don’t know.

Three words
my younger self
might have considered weakness.

Now they seem
almost sacred.

Because perhaps
“I don’t know”

is not the end
of knowledge.

Perhaps it is
where real knowledge begins.

The closed mind says,

I know.

The empty mind says,

Anything is possible.

But perhaps
the open mind simply says,

Show me.

Show me the evidence.

Show me the reasoning.

Show me the experience.

Let me question it.

Let you question me.

And if what remains
after both of us
have finished defending ourselves
is something truer—

let us both
have the courage
to bow before it.

Maybe that is openness.

Not surrender.

Not agreement.

Not intellectual fashion.

Not pretending
all ideas are equal.

Just the willingness
to leave one small window open

through which
something greater than my certainty
might enter.

Because what frightens me now
is not discovering
that I was wrong.

What frightens me
is reaching the end of my life

having been wrong—

and never having allowed
the question in.

So…

when I open my mind?

Perhaps nothing dramatic happens.

No thunder.

No revelation.

No sudden enlightenment.

Perhaps I simply become
a little less certain
about things
that do not deserve certainty.

A little more curious.

A little slower to judge.

A little quicker to listen.

A little less interested
in winning.

And perhaps—

beneath all the opinions,
arguments,
knowledge,
experience,
beliefs
and carefully defended conclusions—

I discover something
I had not expected.

That opening my mind
was never really about
letting the world in.

It was about letting me out.

Out of the little room
I had built from everything
I thought
