{"id":822,"date":"2026-09-28T19:17:29","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T00:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.akella.org\/home\/?page_id=822"},"modified":"2026-09-28T19:17:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T00:17:29","slug":"and-who-said-this-was-only-coffee","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.akella.org\/home\/our-poetry\/and-who-said-this-was-only-coffee","title":{"rendered":"\u2026And Who Said This Was Only Coffee?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each morning, with the light still low,<br>I fill the kettle, watch it glow;<br>The same small task, the same old cup\u2014<br>But who is it that\u2019s waking up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My hand knows where the teaspoons lie;<br>I hardly look as I pass by.<br>How much of life goes by that way\u2014<br>My body here, my mind away?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Away with work I\u2019ve yet to do,<br>With yesterday\u2019s unfinished queue;<br>While here, beneath my very nose,<br>The fragrance of the coffee grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today I pause. The waters sing.<br>Must I accomplish anything?<br>Can I stand here, with nothing earned,<br>And hear what haste has never learned?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watch the little spirals rise<br>And disappear before my eyes.<br>I cannot keep them. Still, I stay\u2014<br>Must beauty last to bless my day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cup is chipped beside the rim;<br>I turn it, fill it to the brim.<br>How many mornings has it known,<br>Held in these hands as I have grown?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in this sip, the rain is there,<br>The soil, the sun, another\u2019s care;<br>Some hands I\u2019ll never meet have grown<br>The beans I thoughtlessly call my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve lit my lamp and bowed my head,<br>Repeated words my teachers said;<br>Now, lifting coffee, warm and sweet,<br>I feel the same earth at my feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would God be waiting only where<br>I\u2019ve made a proper place for prayer?<br>Or have I hurried past Him here,<br>Then wondered why He felt less near?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phone lights up. I let it be;<br>For once, the world can wait for me.<br>I take one sip, then breathe, then two\u2014<br>How strange, the things I hurry through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s still a counter I must wipe,<br>A stubborn stain, a leaking pipe;<br>I wet the cloth and wipe it clean,<br>And watch the wood emerge between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomorrow, I may rush once more,<br>And leave my cup beside the door.<br>But now I know how little space<br>It takes to meet the world with grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I rinse the cup.
