I tuck my little habits where
the daylight wouldn\u2019t think to stare:
a task postponed, a thought rehearsed,
the easy thing attended first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I keep a \u201clater\u201d close at hand,
a small and densely peopled land,
where good intentions sit for tea
and say, \u201cWe\u2019ll start at half past three.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I give excuses softer chairs
and listen kindly to their prayers.
\u201cOf course I\u2019m tired. Of course, stay in.\u201d
Then fetch a blanket for the sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My inner critic clears its throat;
I help it button up its coat.
\u201cYou\u2019ve made your point. Now have some bread.
We\u2019ll try again when we\u2019ve been fed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if these habits overstay,
I needn\u2019t turn myself away.
Leave room for change, but room to rest;
a crowded heart can do its best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let this be folded, warm and wide,
an envelope with me inside\u2014
no stern address, no debt come due,
just: \u201cWelcome home. There\u2019s room for you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
