Coarse thread can be produced quickly. Fine thread demands attention. The fibers must be drawn carefully, the tension must remain steady and the hands cannot wander merely because the mind has become impatient.

In the traditional explanation of this couplet, the thread represents good conduct and spiritually meaningful action. Ram is the true buyer—the one who recognizes their value and gives their fruit. The language of buying and selling may sound transactional, but I do not think Kabir is teaching us how to bargain with God. He is asking me to reconsider the marketplace in which I seek approval. Who is evaluating my work? If my real customer is public applause, I will polish whatever people can see. If recognition is the payment I expect, unnoticed work will begin to feel worthless. But if Ram is the buyer, sincerity matters even when nobody congratulates me.

Richard Sennett writes about craftsmanship in a modern, social context. The craftsperson wants to do something well because the work itself deserves care. Kabir goes further: the quality of my action also reveals the quality of attention and intention I bring before the Divine. The two ideas are not identical. Sennett is concerned with skill, standards and the dignity of making. Kabir gives the work a spiritual witness. Yet both refuse the same temptation—the habit of doing only enough to be seen as competent.

I know how easily that temptation appears. A report can be made impressive while an inconvenient fact is quietly buried. An apology can contain all the correct words while protecting the ego that caused the hurt. A prayer can sound beautiful while my attention is already preparing tomorrow’s list. I can complete a task so that it disappears from my calendar, without asking what my haste passes into another person’s hands.

Kabir’s fine thread asks for more. Not perfectionism. A thread pulled too tightly will snap. Endless polishing can become another form of fear. The couplet asks for care, not obsession; sincerity, not paralysis.

Perhaps I can place three questions beside today’s work:
a) Would I do this as carefully if nobody knew I had done it?
b) Am I improving what matters—or decorating what will be noticed?
c) Will this thread hold when someone else must depend upon it?

Every day, I spin something through my words, choices and small responsibilities. Much of it may never receive applause. That does not make it valueless. The world often buys the shine. Kabir asks whether the thread can bear the weight. I ask - what is the value of something that fails when truly needed?

“Craftsmanship names an enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake.”— Richard Sennett, The Craftsman (2008)Kabir – The coupletनाँन्हाँ काती चित दे, महँगे मोलि बिकाइ।गाहक राजा राम है, और न नेड़ा आइ॥TransliteratedNā̃nhā̃ kātī cita de, mahaṅge moli bikāi |Gāhaka rājā Rāma hai, aura na neṛā āi ||TranslationSpin the…

[5,4,9,10

post-887","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-kabir","category-philosophy","category-philosophy-and-religion","category-religion
["GET
